Saturday

For the last few days the oxygen saturation in my blood has been dropping and my weight has been increasing, which means I'm retaining water again. Today my legs where swelled back up to the size they were when this all started. This is caused by something called Protein-Losing Enteropathy according to my cardiologists and occurs sometimes in people who have had a Fontan surgery. The cause is unkown, and it basically means that my body is losing protein.

Normally, when your body maintains the proper level of protein, the protein soaks up fluids and keeps it in your bloodstream so your body can process it properly. When your protein gets low, the fluid it would soak up can leak outside of your bloodstream and collect in you legs and abdomen, causing swelling. And when you sit in a hospital bed all day, it can collect in your chest cavity causing breathing problems like the low O2 saturation. The way we are getting rid of the excess fluid is by adding Albumin to my blood stream to draw the fluid back into the bloodstream, and then giving me lasix, which is a diuretic that causes me to "process" the fluids more quickly than normal. Although I got rid of a lot of fluid today, my legs are still pretty swollen and so we'll probably have to do two more "doses" tomorrow, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Hopefully that will get me back down to my dry weight.

I also had another radiation treatment for my head lumps. It was quick, painless and really uneventful. We'll start doing both radiation treatments on Monday.

Dear Ryan (and Kendra),

Please know that this news of your cancer hit us very hard. You’re a special guy to us, and we’re so sorry for what you’re going through.

A couple days ago I heard a story from a colleague of mine. He had a serious case of malaria when he was living with a remote tribe in the Amazon basin of Brazil. One night while he was passing in and out of delirium he noticed a man, a friend of his from that tribe, sitting next to the bed. The man sat with him through the whole night occasionally cooling his head with a damp cloth.

We can’t walk the path you’re called to walk, but we do want to walk (or sit) with you in a spiritual sense. Thanks for posting your experience and thoughts in this blog. We’ll keep in touch.

your “uncle” Don

Dear Ryan and Kendra,
We met your parents at church this morning. We are praying for your complete recovery. Psalm 139 has always been a comfort to us. God, who can heal, knows all of our thoughts and concerns, He is so personal He places his hand on our shoulder,He's like our Dad. We suggest you read this Psalm and consider what a great God we have. If we can be of any help to you, tell your parents, we'd love to be available.
Love Gale and Lonnie VanderPol, Newcastle WA

Dear Ryan,

I am very saddened to hear this news and have been thinking of you often.

Although it is impossible to really understand what you are going through, I think that if I were in your situation, I would contact Paul Pitchford, who is a healing practitioner who blends Eastern and Western methods. If you are interested, you can read about him on this site:

I have read one of his books and taken a lot out of it into my daily life.

I will be thinking of you, and please keep us updated.

Becca

Hi Ryan, this is your cousin, Dawn Bush (Mulder) from Michigan. I heard from my mom about your illness and come to find out a friend of mine is friends with your other cousin here in Holland, Jill Heckman (??) so it was through her that I got your blog. wow, small world. I am going to be sending your blog page to my parents and brothers so they can keep up on you and your prognosis and communicate with you. It was nice to see pictures of you since it has been SO long since we saw you (I think Renee's wedding was the last time) I still love your smile!! Try not to loose that smile despite the tests, the pokes, the doctors,..etc... I'm assuming the girl in the picture, Kendra?, is your girlfriend. Tell her "nice to meet her" :) Also please say HI to your folks for me. So what do I say after years of not talking and now finding out you have cancer? Well... I say I love ya and PLEASE know they we are ALL (my whole family) are PRAY, PRAY, PRAYING for you. I wish there was more we could do but of course it's not in any of our hands. Keep that cute smile going. write back if you can. dawnbush@hotmail.com

This is such a shock, I'm not sure there are words to say what I'm thinking right now. I'm sending positive thoughts to both of you. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help make your day to day life easier. You've gotta pull through this... someone has to teach those folks at the Big G a thing or two!

Hello Ryan and Kendra,
I'm not sure if you remember me Ryan, (it's OK if you don't!), but I remember you from the family reunion here in Banff a while back. I have lupus, and while it is not cancer, not even close, I have sat in hospital beds for weeks and weeks, I have had protein loss, water retention, I've taken lasix, and I've lay on the floor with my legs up the wall trying to make that water move! I've also had chemo drug treatments, but for lupus it's a much, much smaller dose. But it's still no fun. I imagine radiation is not that different. I feel for you!

We are praying for you and our thoughts are with you often. It's really hard to maintain anything like a normal perspective in the middle of all this. So if you feel like you are losing it - don't worry, it's normal!

Since the doctors have said that all they can offer you is palliative care, you may want to look into alternative treatments. Here are a few that I found when i was looking for something other than chemo to treat my lupus. I cannot necessarily recommend any of them, you will want to check them out for yourself. And if you don't want to - that's fine too! Only if you wanted the info I thought I'd make it a little easier for you to find.

Best of luck and may God's grace be brilliantly evident to you!

Helen Hekman
and for your cousin, Nate
who would probably never consider alternative care! and that's OK too. :-)

Both Oasis of Hope and the Natural Oncology Center seem pretty high-tech and modern, be based on clinical trials, and not be averse to using both traditional and alternative treatments. Vince Gammill really impressed Gaetan Morency when his daughter was dying of cancer, for those Wycliffe-ites who remember him.

Hi Ryan and Kendra - my name is Melissa and I am your cousins Becca, Andy and Katie Hekman's aunt (your Aunt Sue's sister). I just wanted to let you know you have been in my thoughts and prayers since finding out about your situation and there are no words to express the feelings everyone is having right now - and of course we cannot possibly understand the depth of your pain. Please just know how many people are concerned for you. Mostly I pray for peace for both of you, in whatever form you can find it. Thank you for putting out this blog. I know it helps your family/friends in as many ways as it helps you to have this outlet. Use it to your best advantage.
