Any Good Movies?

I've decided to get Ryan a Netflix membership, since we seem to be passing a lot of time watching movies these days.

Please recommend some of your favorite movies here. Sad, funny, whatever. Just let us know what movies you think everyone should see at least once in their life.

Shadowlands would be a good choice. Anthony Hopkins and Deborah Winger give excellent performances and it even addresses some of the same difficult questions that have been touched upon on this blog.

On a lighter note, Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy provides some good pointless entertainment. :)

Rick, we actually watched Shadowlands with Ken and Shirley the other night. We all really enjoyed it, even if (and perhaps especially because) it hit so close to home.

The Hunger (David Bowie, vampire faced with his own death. Oldie, but one of my favorite vampire movies evar!)
Classically good movies:
Repo Man
American History X
Rumble Fish
My Own Private Idaho
Hackers
The Running Man
Tron
V for Vendetta (you can watch it a million & one times)
Dune

Find tv shows you like (it's so great when you don't have commercials to deal with):
Boondocks
Drawn Together
Battlestar Gallactica
Twin Peaks
Farscape

"Just Like Heaven". I watch this one a lot. It always helps me put things in perspective. Also "the Jacket", oooh and on a lighter note a comedy about the after life "Defending Your Life".

Kendra, I sent you a list by email, but I wanted to share that the best movie I saw in 2006 was "The World's Fastest Indian" with Anthony Hopkins (it's not about Native Americans)
Runner-up for 2006 was a quirky sleeper called "The Station Agent."
I really think you'll enjoy these, but I also suggested some of my favorite feel-good movies in my email.
Love, Mom

"Everything Is Illuminated" and "Garden State" are two of my most recent faves - good flicks for kids our age.

I don't know if FLYBOYS is out yet but that was quite good.

My favorite movie is "Enchanted April". It always makes me more hopeful when I'm feeling down.

Series are great I would suggest looking at the first season of Weeds as well as Entourage and Arrested Development.

Highly recommend Boondock Saints and every Family Guy episode ever made. I have most of them so let me know if you want them shipped out!

I enjoyed "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" and "Signs".

The Couplings TV series (brit version of friends) is a lot of fun too. For classy humor, see "Yes Minister' and "Yes Prime Minister", again brit TV series.

Hi Ryan,

This is Brian, a friend of Matt's in Colorado.

Dumb and Dumber - possibly every day
Band of Brothers - This will wipe out three days.

And someone listed TRON. I am just glad to see that I am not the only fan in the world.

As for TV shows, Battlestar Galactica is great, nothing like the original TV series (although I am a fan of that too). 24 is also a great series.

Take care and God bless!

Brian

Hey this is Eric, coworker of his, tall goofy guy who knows about DEF CON.

I am always a fan of fantasy movies, anything to do with creativity or imagination.

Labrynth - David bowie baby.. that’s all i need to say

Neverending story - well it did actually end, but still really creative! Also the main story line focuses that not enough people dream anymore. That hits close to home.

Dark Crystal - Jim Henson is the man, very creative, the creatures and characters are full of energy.

Mirror Mask - very dark and chaotic at times, a Neil Gaiman co-wrote this as well

Cell - a jen lopez flick, if you boycotted this film because of her, stop it and give it a shot. The dream world she enters is really awesome.

Alice in wonderland - Any version is good to watch, but i would really recommend checking out this Czechoslovakia version called Neco z Alenky http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095715/ I have forced friends to sit down and watch it, many have left speechless. It is a mind blowing version of Lewis carol's story. Shows just about everything Disney cut and is a mind trip. They use stop go animation and is really creepy/gothic.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen – A great Terry Gilliam movie, kinda reminds me a little of big fish. Grand stories that are almost too big to believe, of course you can tie rope to the end of the crescent moon and rappel down to earth.

Time Bandits – Another great Terry Gilliam flick, time traveling midgets. Some of the alternate worlds were amazing, and the villain was just perfect. I really liked his minions, robed creatures with bull skulls.

Monty Python and the quest for the holy grail – The best Terry Gilliam movie ever. The origin of gamer quotes, just wild and wacky. There are no borders in this film.

Brazil – Terry Gilliam... seeing a pattern yet? A strange futuristic tale, I love how he would take a problem/scenario we see everyday and over exaggerate it ten fold. Showing women who are going through extreme plastic surgery for instance.

Big Fish – Story telling at its best, a true logic versus creative story.

Chick Flicks:

Princess Bride – The one and only, a fun swashbuckling masterpiece that is the definition of True Love. If you have not seen it then your heart is black.

Moulin Rouge – Great set, almost felt like a play, Anything that Baz Luhrmann directs is magic. If you get a chance see strictly ballroom or his Romeo and Juliet film.

Old Dreams
I am a sucker for movies that showcase the dreams of previous generations on technology. Back when few knew how steam engines and planes operated.

Iron Giant – A really nice animation of a boy and his robot

Steam Boy – Awesome Anime, shows all sorts of steam technology devices, amazing.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow – the special effects really made me feel like I was reading a pulp comic.

Wild Wild West – hold on! I know it was bad, terrible. But the imagination behind the devices, the villains world, even the small things were really cool. Just fast forward everything else.

Animated films:
Howl’s moving castle – Wow anything and I mean anything done by Miazaki is worth seeing. His movies have something new and creative that just blows me away. This is one of my favorite films of us along with Spirited Away

Toy Story 1 & 2 – talking toys, you know we all at one point had a similar dream. Just thinking about it makes me smile.

After Hours
Comedy, early Martin Scorsese.

City of Lost Children
Scifi sort of the feel of Dark City. Ron Perlman is the star, amazing set, quite the artistic film..

and more recently, if you haven't seen this one.. The 40 yr old virgin
Steve Carell, nuff said.

Best,
Tony

Oh boy, there are a lot of good suggestions in this list - here are a few TOTALLY random titles to add:

Dead Again (mystery)
Dr. Zhivago
Paris, Texas
My Life As A Dog
Dances With Wolves
Muppets in Space
Wizard of Oz
The Piano
October Sky
Billy Elliott
Diva
Housekeeping
Stop Making Sense (Talking Heads)
Bridges of Madison County
Walk the Line
Ray
China Syndrome

Okay, I'll stop now - it's too random even for me! You cannot imagine the thought process that lead me through that list...

We thought we'd give a little advice on movies. you know how often my mom goes to see them. I can't help much cause I never get to go.

My Life As A Dog is a swedish film that is funny, quirky and critical of America's desire for bigness. (actually saw that one and loved it-high on both our lists)

Funny movie: Word Play...people get together and do crossword puzzles with a time limit (ala Best In Show-documentary style)

Cinderella Man and the Insider are two inspirational movies. The Constant Gardner.

Maybe you've seen them all, but I'll try to think of more.
